Project Background

Access to reliable electricity remains one of the most pressing development challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa. Chad, with an electrification rate among the lowest in the world, represents both a significant need and an opportunity for renewable energy solutions that can leapfrog traditional grid infrastructure.

GSI was engaged to design, procure, and construct a solar power facility that would deliver reliable, clean electricity to communities that have historically relied on expensive and polluting diesel generators.

Technical Scope

The Chad project involved:

  • System Design: Custom engineering adapted for Chad's extreme climate conditions, including high temperatures, dust, and seasonal variations
  • Equipment Procurement: High-efficiency monocrystalline solar panels, robust inverters, and battery storage systems sourced from certified international suppliers
  • Civil Works: Foundation construction, mounting structure installation, and site preparation in challenging terrain
  • Electrical Works: MV/LV electrical systems, protection equipment, and grid connection infrastructure
  • Commissioning: Full system testing, performance verification, and handover to local operators

Challenges and Solutions

Working in Chad presented unique logistical and technical challenges. GSI's experienced project team developed innovative solutions for:

  • Logistics: Coordinating equipment delivery across long distances with limited infrastructure
  • Climate: Designing systems to withstand extreme heat and dust while maintaining optimal performance
  • Local Capacity: Training local technicians to operate and maintain the system independently

Impact

The completed project is delivering measurable benefits to the communities it serves:

  • Reliable electricity for homes, schools, and health facilities
  • Reduced dependence on diesel generators, lowering costs and emissions
  • Local employment during construction and ongoing operations
  • A model for replicable clean energy deployment across the region

"This project demonstrates that high-quality solar infrastructure can be delivered anywhere in the world," said GSI's Africa Project Director. "We are proud to contribute to Chad's energy future and to the broader goal of universal energy access."

GSI continues to explore additional project opportunities across Sub-Saharan Africa, building on the expertise and relationships developed through this pioneering project.
